United Methodist Student Day - November 28th
Someone once said, “We all need someone who inspires us to do better than we know how.” That is what United Methodists do – both individually and collectively – when we give to United Methodist Student Day. Through this Special Sunday offering United Methodists inspire and empower others to be the best they can be.
Do you ever wonder where your special Sunday gift goes? The United Methodist Student Day offering makes it possible for the church to award scholarships and loans to deserving United Methodist students. Each year 10 percent of the funds come back to the annual conference for merit scholarship awards. The annual conferences participating in the Rebate Program may award one or more merit scholarships to United Methodist students who reside in the conference and attend a United Methodist related college or university.
Did you know that General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (BGHEM) administers more than 50 scholarship programs funded through Special Sunday offerings, wills, annuities and other designated gifts? That scholarship recipients include United Methodist students from various backgrounds, working toward higher education degrees? Applicants may be enrolled at any accredited institution within the United States. That scholarships for racial-ethnic undergraduate or graduate students are also available? Allocations also go to the 122 United Methodist related colleges and universities, seminaries and theological schools to be issued as scholarships by the institutions’ financial aid offices? That GBGM also administers 30 general, restricted and fiduciary United Methodist loan funds. Generally, students may borrow up to $5,000 per calendar year at an interest rate of 5 percent.
We are proud that the following members of the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference have received scholarships this year through the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry to further their education: Jalisa Ross of Haikey Chapel UMC at Oklahoma City University; Rev. David Dunson, pastor of Newtown UMC at Philips Theological Seminary; and Justine Smith of Norman First American UMC at Harvard University.
