OIMC Holds 168th Annual Conference Session

"Having been directly involved in the Annual Conference for approximately the last ten years, this was the best in my memory. The weather was good, the grounds were beautiful, the reports seemed short and to the point. Marcus Briggs Cloud was wonderful as music director and the preaching was inspirational. Merle was Merle. The food and fellowship, as always, were outstanding. It seemed as though the Spirit of God was in everything and everyone. I am very appreciative of the time and labor involved into making this, in my opinion, the best conference ever!" ... Royce Wittman, Lay Missioner

This kind of sentiment continues to be heard as people recall the proceedings of this year's annual conference. The theme, "Reclaiming the Future: Inform, Inspire, Engage" was lived out throughout the conference.

Mr. Marcus Briggs-Cloud, worship leader, did a wonderful job in setting the tone with his musical abilities. The tribal hymn singing and the Holy Communion liturgy that was written by clergy from our conference also helped set the tone for spiritualness of the conference.

Four ministerial candidates were presented during the Friday evening services: David Harjo, Lawana Sacquat-Castro; Tommy Wesley and Rudy Tartsah, Jr. During the time of remembrance the lives of Irene Keeter, spouse of Rev. Ray Keeter; Bradley Hilton Wahnee, grandson of Rev. William Foote, Sr.; Blanche Beaver, daughter of Rev. James Yeager (Dec.); Opal Nanette Harjo, spouse of Rev. V. Mike Harjo; Beatrice Deere, surviving spouse of Rev. Jackson Deere; Rev. David Ray Adair (retired) and Rev. JoAnn Black Williams (retired) were remembered.

Rev. Glen Kernell, Jr., was ordained elder and Rev. Billie Nowabbi, elder retired. Rev. July Tecumseh was welcomed as the new District Superintendent for the Southern District. There were five baptisms during worship Sunday morning.

The budget of $1,178,412 for 2011 was approved. The recommendation presented by the Council on Local Church Ministries Volunteer in Mission ministry team that the conference adopt the Dulac Community Center, Dulac, Louisiana as the conference's mission project for the remainder of the quadrennium was approved unanimously. One way of supporting this recommendation will be the deployment of a VIM team to Dulac once every six months, one in September and one in March. Offerings from Thursday and Friday evening services will go to help support the Dulac Community Center. The conference was also recognized for their contribution to the Haiti Relief. Hundreds of health kits have been sent from our conference as well as over $2,000 has been contributed.

Not only did the adults enjoy annual conference so did the children and youth. Patsy Eyachabbe, Northeast Region children's coordinator, had a wonderful program planned for children 11 years of age and under with the theme "Heavenly Treasurers." Patsy held the first ever children's workers banquet which was well attended.

The youth raised approximately $1,000 for YSF through their silent auction, root beer floats and cell phone ringing. They were very pleased to have Bishop Hayes as their speaker for their Senior Banquet. At the United Methodist Men's banquet the following four men were recognized as men of the year: Northeast Region, Jim Chalakee, Pickett Chapel UMC; Southeast Region, Ray Willis, Bethel Hill UMC; Central Region, Jim White, Ponca Mission; Southwest Region, Leslie Tartsah, Sr., JJ Methvin UMC.

Another comment on annual conference: I always enjoy Annual Conference. I have shared the events of the laity session with my fellow annual conference lay leaders who were very impressed with the idea. One person called it phenomenal, another said it was brilliant. The Board of Laity wanted to make a point and I hope we did. I like the way the whole conference focused in on the central theme of us all working together to make our conference strong and viable to carry it into the next generation. I am very concerned about whether this information will make it back to the local church. This is what the Board of Laity will be following up on throughout this year. The local church has to know all the possible scenarios, one of which we will be living out. Hopefully and prayerfully it will be one of stability and strength, one that Native people have worked hard for, but first they must be informed of all that our conference is working through. Only with the backing of the laity of each local church will OIMC survive" ... Sue Burgess, Conference Lay Leader.
