I am pleased to announce that we have received a grant from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry to sponsor a continuing education event for OIMC clergy and laity on prison ministry. Several have asked about information on getting started to do prison ministry in your areas and we have great resources through the Oklahoma Annual Conference to prepare us.
We are sponsoring the training event on May 13-14, 2011 at the Best Western Saddleback Inn and Hotel in Oklahoma City. The hotel is located one block north of I-40 and Meridian. The registration fee for the event is $20 a person, which will go towards the costs that are not covered in the grant. Rooms will be double occupancy. The deadline to register for the event is May 3, 2011. I have enclosed a registration form that will need to be emailed or mailed back to the OIMC office. We will begin with registration at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 13 and will conclude in the mid-afternoon on May 14th. The event is open to fifty participants and we will accept the registrations on a first come, first-served basis.
We are fortunate to have the support of the Criminal Justice and Mercy Ministries (CJAMM) of the Oklahoma Conference. Rev. Stan Basler, director of CJAMM will be one of our keynote speakers, along with Rev. Brantley Tillery, pastor and director of the St. Lukes Redemption Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Both of them have great experience in this field and we are excited they are providing much of the program for us. We will have presentations and workshops on the Operation Hope prison ministry, Kairos Prison ministries, the Exodus House and how to get started with prison ministries. The event will have a specific focus on ministering to Native Americans who are incarcerated.
Clergy members and Lay Missioners will receive continuing education hours for the event. Please contact me for further information.
