“Sisterhood of the Travelin’ Shoes”

April 12-13, 2010

Wear your travelin’ shoes, sister.

Wear your travelin’ shoes.

Are your shoes for city streets,

Or for dusty rural lanes?

All women in ministry across the South Central Jurisdiction are invited to gather in Oklahoma City on April 12-13 to celebrate the “Sisterhood of the Travelin’ Shoes.”  Bishop Judith Craig will be our guide as we kick off our shoes, relax, worship, eat and share together the joys of ministry.  The event itself is basically 24 hours, from 1:00 pm Monday to 2:30 pm on Tuesday, but you’re invited to come early or stay late for some personal Sabbath time after Holy Week.

St. Luke’s United Methodist Church at 222 NW 15th in downtown Oklahoma City will be hosting our conference activities.  The Courtyard Marriot in Bricktown is the retreat hotel, (405) 232-2290, featuring the special rate of $109 per night for up to four people in a room.  Reservations must be made by March 29 (code: Women in Ministry).  Registration for the retreat is just $50, which can be sent to Rev. Jeannie Himes at 208 S. Douglas Blvd., Midwest City, OK 73130-4208.  More information can be found on Facebook or by e-mailing revjeankc@aol.com

Deacons, elders, retirees, lay pastors, students, deaconesses, diaconals and lay missioners are all invited.  Students may register for $25, and other partial scholarships are available.

Are you the gal for pumps, or boots,

or sandals and brightly painted toes?

Do they lead you silently on a labyrinth,

down hospital corridors, or chasing a child,

or dancing, dancing, dancing your faith?

The Rev. Anita Phillips of the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference will be preaching for the opening worship service.  A time for getting acquainted in small groups will be followed by free time with a variety of options.  Bishop Craig’s first plenary will be Monday evening at 6:30.  Following dinner, the women will be enjoying a Divine Divas concert in the Poteet Theater, featuring the fine-tuned harmonies of Revs. Jessica Moffatt Seay, Amy Venable, and Twila Gibbens-Rickman from the Oklahoma Conference.  A dessert bar tops off the evening.

Tuesday will include a second plenary with Bishop Craig and a variety of break-out groups focused on diverse ministry topics.  The retreat will conclude with worship after lunch, as we welcome the Rev. Cheryl Bell from the Kansas West Conference to the pulpit. Having been well-fed for our journeys, we’ll put our travelin’ shoes back on and return to the places where the Spirit is calling us to lead. The SCL Women’s Leadership Team will meet immediately following the retreat.

Wear your shoes, sister.

Wear your favorite,

your wildest,

your comfiest,

your travelin’ shoes.
