Mt. Scott Comanche United Methodist Church Narrative of the Church History

Mt. Scott Comanche United Methodist Church Narrative of the Church History The Mt. Scott Comanche United Methodist Church had its beginning in the 1930’s. The first location was across the road, west of the present location. It began in tent meetings. The location moved across the road a few years later when the church building was built on land donated by the Pasah family. It was a church building that had a basement (with steep, small steps) and a high front porch with many steps and a smaller back porch which was also steep. (Nowadays it would be ruled a safety hazard and a ramp would have had to be built!) Directly to the south, a tabernacle was also built where services were held on occasion. The church building was sold when the new building was built. The tabernacle was torn down many years later.

In the early 1970’s, the present church building was built. It was a one level building with the sanctuary on the north side and a dining hall on the other side, separated by a foyer and two bathrooms. The original building was accented with a tall cross that rose above the roof; however tornadic winds caused an extreme makeover a few years ago. The cross no longer towers over the church.

In 1999, our friends from Indiana, (the work group of retired professionals) built a new dining hall just north of the existing building. A year or two later the two buildings were connected and a new main entrance came into existence.

The church has a long history of participation within the conference. At one time the Annual Conference was held on the church grounds. This church has been served by many well known pastors since the beginning. The older members can name them all. It has been part of a circuit for a long time, even to the present day. It once shared pastors with Petarsy UMC but now shares pastors with the Mt. Scott Kiowa UMC. The church is active and growing. The congregation hopes to have their own pastor one day. The church has plans to add on an office and classrooms for Sunday school and vacation Bible school in the very near future.
