Greetings to all:
I wanted to let you all know that Eli Marshall and I attended the “Lay Speaking Ministries” event in Tulsa in mid-August. We took different classes so we could share the information. It was a very spiritual event. On the last day, which was Sunday, OIMC was in charge of the worship service. Several ladies from Pickett Chapel came and sang native hymns and were dressed in native dress. Thank you ladies for sacrificing your Sunday morning to be with us, also thank you to Rev. Bill Foote for sharing them with us. Everybody loved having them with us.
This event was the first of its kind sponsored by the South Central Jurisdiction. The group voted to have it again next year. I highly recommend this event to those of you who are at the “advanced” level of Lay Speaking Ministries and are unable to attend the regional sponsored Lay speaking Ministries courses.
On Monday, August 29, 2005, a small group of us met with Sandy Zeigler from the General Board of Discipleship in Nashville. She had a power-point presentation on Leadership which included: Discipleship, Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts and Laity’s Role in Ministry. This would be a very good presentation for all laity. We made plans to work on this and hopefully this can be done soon.
Sandy also discussed some of the issues we brought to her such as:
1. Outreach Ministries – training needed for laity’s role in various places such as hospital visits, nursing home visits, etc. As laity we need to know the “how to” part. She suggested the “Caring” lay speaking course.
2. Strengthening family bonds – There is an up-coming training resource on this subject. She suggested keeping in touch with the General Board of Discipleship web site.
3. Upcoming events – Sandy informed me of the grant that is available for gatherings such as we have had in the past. I will begin working on this immediately.
If you have any other ideas or concerns from your local church or your region please contact me or your regional lay leader.
