Celebrating the Historic Dedication of Seeley Chapel

The remodeled historic Seeley Chapel United Methodist Church service of dedication took place Sunday, Aug. 4, 2024, in Connerville, Oklahoma.

As 2024 comes to a close, we reflect on a significant moment in the life of the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference (OIMC) and the broader Native community: the dedication and unveiling of the newly remodeled historic Seeley Chapel United Methodist Church. This momentous event, held on Sunday, August 4, in Connerville, Oklahoma, brought together nearly 100 attendees, including church members, dignitaries, and members of the Chickasaw Nation, to celebrate this treasured piece of history.

The dedication service featured heartfelt remarks from Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby and Lt. Governor Chris Anoatubby, underscoring the deep connection between Seeley Chapel and the Chickasaw Nation.

“When given the opportunity to be a part of the restoration efforts, we were eager and honored because of Seeley Chapel’s historic significance and importance to the Chickasaw Nation, and what this church represents to this community and its congregation,” Governor Anoatubby said.

Also in attendance were Bishop James Nunn of the United Methodist Church, the Rev. Margaret Johnson, Assistant to the Bishop, and the Rev. Sharon Yeahquo, OIMC South District Superintendent, among others. Their presence highlighted the collaborative efforts that made the restoration possible.

“I am aware of the historic significance of this place within the Chickasaw Nation,” Bishop Nunn said. “It is an honor to be here to celebrate not only the rededication of this building, but also the history and vision that came out of this ministry that has shaped the Chickasaw Nation in such a marvelous way.”

The remodel of Seeley Chapel was made possible through the generous support of the Chickasaw Nation. As Bishop Nunn noted, this act of kindness exemplifies the longstanding relationship between the Chickasaw Nation and the OIMC, which represents about 80 Native American churches across Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas.

Seeley Chapel stands as a testament to the enduring faith and determination of the Chickasaw people. As the birthplace of the Seeley Chapel movement in the 1960s, it played a pivotal role in reestablishing Chickasaw self-determination. It was here, in October 1960, that more than 100 Chickasaws gathered to discuss the future of their nation. This grassroots movement led to the passage of landmark legislation in 1970, restoring the right of the Five Tribes to elect their own leaders.

In 1971, the Chickasaw people elected Overton James as Governor in the tribe’s first election since 1904, setting the foundation for the vibrant, self-governing Chickasaw Nation we see today.

“The Seeley Chapel movement set the groundwork for who we are today – a powerful and dynamic tribe dedicated to serving Chickasaw people everywhere,” Governor Anoatubby said.

As we look ahead, this year-end reflection reminds us of the power of faith, history, and community. The rededication of Seeley Chapel is not just a celebration of a restored building; it is a celebration of the resilience and vision that continue to inspire both the OIMC and the Chickasaw Nation.
