Youth from across both the Oklahoma and Oklahoma Indian Missionary conferences gathered at Bishop Angie Smith Chapel on the Oklahoma City University campus for an inspiring Youth Service Day on Sunday, November 10, 2024.
Organized by the OCU Wesley Center campus ministry and hosted by the Wimberly School of Religion’s 2024-2025 freshman class, the event brought together United Methodist youth for a day dedicated to service and fellowship.
Among the participants were youth were members from the United Methodist Church of Apache and Billy Hooton United Methodist Church. The day’s agenda was packed with activities, beginning with icebreaker games and worksite assignments, and culminating in worship and Holy Communion.
The youth embraced a variety of service projects, including church landscape maintenance, assembling flood buckets for the United Methodist Committee on
Relief (UMCOR), and spreading mulch around the chapel grounds. The day
ended on a spiritual high note with a vibrant worship service featuring a praise band, uplifting songs, and a meaningful message, followed by Holy Communion.
Rev. Donna Pewo, OIMC’s Director of Connectional Ministries, praised the event, saying, “What a great way for youth to serve in this capacity in the community and life of the church.”
Susan Muliagatele, assistant coordinator for the Southwest Region, shared a powerful message from scripture to encourage the youth: “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.” (1 Timothy 4:12, NLT).
